What grade do children learn the times tables?

Last updated on

Children typically start learning the times tables in Grade 2 (around age 7) and know all the tables up to 10 fluently by the end of Grade 3. The easy tables (1, 2, 5, 10) come first, followed by 3, 4, and 6, with the harder 7, 8, and 9 last. The 12 times table is taught in Grade 4 in countries that follow the UK or US curriculum.

What gets taught when

Curriculum standards vary by country, but the typical pattern across English-speaking systems looks like this.

  • Grade 1: no times tables yet — addition, subtraction, and number sense up to 20
  • Grade 2: 1, 2, 5, and 10 times tables, sometimes a start on 3
  • Grade 3: all times tables up to 10, including the harder 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9
  • Grade 4: review and automaticity, division facts, and the 11 and 12 times tables

What automaticity means

A child knows a times table when the answer arrives without calculating. Not working out 7 × 8 as 7 × 7 + 7, but just seeing 56. This is called automaticity, and it is what schools test for.

Automaticity comes mostly during Grades 3 and 4. Short daily practice (5 to 10 minutes) builds it faster than one long session per week.

How does this compare across countries?

The UK Year 4 multiplication tables check tests fluency on the tables up to 12 × 12. In the US, the Common Core standard expects fluency with multiplication facts within 100 by the end of Grade 3 (so up to 10 × 10). Most other systems sit somewhere between these two.

In the Netherlands, children learn tables in groep 4 and 5. In Belgium, in the 2de and 3de leerjaar. The ages line up roughly: 7 to 9 years old.

What if a child falls behind?

About a quarter of children in any class need extra practice. That is normal. What helps: daily short practice, starting from a table that is already working, and tackling the hard tables (7 and 8) on their own.

What does not help: spending whole afternoons on tables, or comparing with classmates.
