The 7 times table is widely considered the hardest multiplication table. That is because it has fewer obvious patterns than the others. With a couple of tricks and a little practice, you can learn it just as fluently as the rest.

Tricks for the 7 times table

Use the tables you already know

7 × 8 is the same as 8 × 7. If you already know the 8 times table, you already know half of the 7 times table. The same goes for 7 × 2, 7 × 5 and 7 × 10 — they live inside easier tables.

Split it into smaller parts

7 × 8 is hard, but 7 × 4 + 7 × 4 is not. Break a hard fact into two easier ones. Example: 7 × 6 = 7 × 5 + 7 = 35 + 7 = 42.

Memorise the anchor facts

Learn 7 × 5 = 35, 7 × 7 = 49 and 7 × 10 = 70 first. From there you can reach any other fact in the 7 times table by adding or subtracting one 7.

When do children learn this table?

Children typically learn the multiplication tables in Grades 2 and 3 (ages 7–9). The tables of 2, 5 and 10 are taught first, then 3, 4 and 6, and finally the harder tables of 7, 8 and 9. Most children know all tables up to 10 by the end of Grade 3.

Frequently asked questions
What is 7 × 8?+

7 × 8 = 56. This is one of the hardest facts in the times tables. A memory trick: 5, 6, 7, 8 — 56 equals 7 × 8.

Why is the 7 times table so hard?+

The 7 times table has no obvious pattern, unlike the 5 table (ends in 0 or 5) or the 10 table (just add a zero). The answers feel random, so children have to memorise them.

How do you learn the 7 times table quickly?+

Start with the facts you already know from other tables (× 1, × 2, × 5, × 10). Then practise five minutes a day with flashcards or a speed test, and use memory tricks for 7 × 7 (49) and 7 × 8 (56).

What grade do children learn the 7 times table?+

The 7 times table is taught in Grade 3, after children have mastered the easier tables of 2, 5 and 10.
